Reflections&Midterm's Evaluate topic

Present's reflection:
After evaluated the software with my partner, I found that not only teaching is a difficult work but also evaluating is a hard thing to finish. We have to evaluate a lot of things, such as the contents of this material and we have to consider about whether this material suits all learners or not. So, to do a evaluation is quite a important work!

3/19 reflection

The substitute teacher provided a useful website which can help us to use the audio program. And he taught us how to mix the voices that we recorded. I know through the computer assistant teaching can help learner easily to recognize what the teacher wants learners to know, and it is also what I want to learn more!

Q:1.

(1.) What are the three phrases of CALL?

A: behavioristic CALL, communicative CALL, andintegrativeCALL

(2.) What role do computers play in each phrase?

A: Behavioristic CALL,Drill and practice courseware is based on the model of computeras tutor. Based on these notions, a number of CALL tutoring systems weredeveloped for the mainframe computers which were used at that time. Oneof the most sophisticated of these was the PLATO system, which ran on itsown special PLATO hardware, including central computers and terminals. The PLATO system included vocabulary drills, brief grammar explanationsand drills, and translations tests at various intervals. Behavioristic CALL was underminedby two important factors. First, behavioristic approaches to language learninghad been rejected at both the theoretical and the pedagogical level. Secondly, the introduction of the microcomputer allowed a whole new range of possibilities. The stage was set for a new phase of CALL.

Communicative CALL, Several types of CALL programs were developed and used during this the phase of communicative CALL. First, there were a variety of programsto provide skill practice, but in a non-drill format. Examples of thesetypes of programs include courseware for paced reading, text reconstruction, and language games.

Integrative CALL,Integrative approaches to CALL are based on two important technologicaldevelopments of the last decade--multimedia computers and the Internet.Multimedia technology--exemplified today by the CD-ROM-- allows a varietyof media (text, graphics, sound, animation, and video) to be accessed ona single machine. What makes multimedia even more powerful is that it alsoentailshypermedia. That means that the multimedia resources areall linked together and that learners can navigate their own path simplyby pointing and clicking a mouse.

Q:2. Visit Warschauer's homepage for his contributions to CALL.

A: The computer is used for skill practice, but in a non-drill format and with a greater degree of student choice, control and interaction.

Q:3.On page 18, the author mentions the use of online chat in a NASA space project to enhance communication skills. Please visit http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/StarChild.html and outline the possibilities of using technology to promote collaborative learning and developing communities of learners

A:Through the Internet, students can establish ties to other students in schools around the world or participate in chat room or in-line discussions with experts on subjects of interest to them.
